A routine trip to Costco nearly turned into a kidnapping case. A young mother was distracted for a few seconds and discovered that her shopping cart containing her four-week-old daughter had been taken by a stranger. He turned out to be Michael Rain, who assured police he had simply mixed up the carts and hadn't even noticed the child.

He was initially charged with second-degree kidnapping, but investigators later reviewed additional security footage and reconstructed the events. The new footage confirmed the theory of a mistake, and the charges were ultimately dropped, although the child's mother still didn't believe it was an accident.
