Correction: It's come to my attention that the person falsely accused of getting with a reviewer for a better game review, Zoe Quinn, came out as non-binary after the events of Gamergate, and now uses they/them pronouns rather than the she/her pronouns used in this video. At the time, they were perceived as a woman, which means that sources on the subject while it was still ongoing used she/her pronouns, and I didn't investigate further.

You know that there was a serious problem when there’s a schoolwide assembly on being nice to each other and then another assembly about it immediately after.

“it was nice playing with you earlier” is so much more positive than gg, and helps clarify that you actually feel happy about the match

i never even considered how saturated “gg” has become and i’m glad this has been brought up for many reasons :]

A wise friend of mine once said: "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will break my heart"

Splatoon streamers: "This is how I'd like to be treated. Please and thank you."

Some person: "No, I'll treat you how I want. Now make content for me and play games with me."

🤦

Rotting always spreads when it's not addressed. It's better to talk about it when the amount of people who do it is small, because the alternative is letting it simmer and spread until it starts getting out of hand or heated- that's when it becomes a big issue and that should be prevented.

I never get why people go against addressing bad behavior, small group or big, because how is it ever bad to work towards a safer and nicer community? And hey, if you're not doing the thing that's addressed, you're not being targeted so why care that it's being talked about?

I’ve never understood the crowd of people who, when told something is either offensive or insensitive in some form, proceed to hold their ground on it instead of just moving on :/

"sensitivity is not weakness" THANK YOU. as someone who's fairly sensitive it's really satisfying hearing that..

i really like these life-lesson videos, they're really well done! i hope these can reach a wider audience than just the splatoon community tbh

edit: okay, reading these comments, i'm not sure if you were just Unclear about the specific difference of "saying gg to the popular streamer after a random solo q match" versus "a casual gg to ur friends". or if the comments just didn't watch the full video.

i thought it was clear enough, but a lot of the comments seem to just be saying "what, saying gg is bad now?" which is definitely not the point

As an autistic person, my brain hurts. It sucks that a thing I was taught to be polite and have good sportsmanship all of my life from sports to online games now has to have more rules that confuse me. I’ve only gone to someone’s chat to say “gg” if I know them and they know me. I did it once with Vic (who doesn’t know me) but we were on the same team and even though we lost, I say “I was fun to play with you! ggs!” and now I’m self conscious that idk if I came off as genuine or not. I understand that people can use manners to mask rudeness, but it’s just frustrating to watch this video as someone who has trouble with the complexities of social interaction. Message heard, though. If that’s what people want, I just won’t do it at all.

So what did we learn today?
Never use English against Gem.

Hhhh… people. We are strange creatures.

now im wondering how gem feels about the "this is dating advice" meme

It's about maintaining a standard of communication higher than "won't get me banned in twitch chat." Quite simple

on the "Words will never hurt me" topic, I always preferred the alternative presented in medical comedy, Scrubs.
"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will hurt forever"

It's so funny whenever people are like "they're just words, why are you so bothered by them lmao" as a response to clearly, actively getting bothered by words like "Be Nicer" themselves

also thank you for extrapolating so much from this seemingly innocuous sentiment. im highly sensitive and it drives me crazy being able to sense so much from a minor interaction and knowing its unlikely people will believe me. we do not live in a culture that values emotional intelligence precisely because its inconvenient to the status quo. so it means a lot to see people with a platform but their foot down on asking people to just be kinder.

Also, text itself is a horrible medium for communication.  So much that we as humans rely on is lost.  Voice tone, volume, timing, body language.  All of which probably make up at least half of anything we communicate.  This makes the words we use far more crucial when talking to someone only by text.

Remember that every video like this you make helps a significant number of people see stuff like this. I don't use twitter but if I would have seen just the tweet I would have probably, at least internally, pushed back as "but I say 'gg' to be polite and express that someone was enjoyable to play against," however, after seeing your video on the subject not only do I see that this is a situation where "if it makes THEM uncomfortable than it is failing at its primary and only goal." wins out. Now I'm that much better as a person too and will be more likely to realize when I'm being trapped in that line of reasoning. (also: your video on squid bagging was probably in the top 5 most influential works of literature/film/art on my philosophy and outlook towards other people. keep up the good work!)

3:16 "If some people want different people than others, giving them that treatment they want is more important than what an old-fashioned rule book says."
19:36 "If [a lack of willingness to be empathetic] leading you to disregard others' experiences in spite of evidence, even scientific findings that the accounts of their experiences are correct - Now you're rudeness has become a dangerous kind of willful ignorance."

It's insane just how much of this video applies to the experience of trans people. I will never get how some people refuse to put in the almost non-existent amount of effort it takes to support trans people, treat them like they ask to be treated, and let them access gender-affirming care. Especially when all the well-done studies on this topic have shown that support and gender-affirming care has massively positive effects on their mental health

Plausible deniability is the scummiest and most frustrating behavior I get from any given group of teens or young adults. Especially, because you just have to tell people to shut up because you know otherwise, and have to maybe live with the consequences of hurting someone innocent someday.
Actually... Thats probably the only reason, or area of reasons, that schools tend to be unfriendly.
