The genre is Steely Dan and none other.

Becker and Fagan, genius composers. One of the best songwriting duos ever.
R.I.P. Walter Becker.

Comparing Steely Dan to "Yacht Rock" is an insult to the their music . There's a "Yacht Rock" channel  actually  on Sirius Radio and one Band you won't hear on that channel is Steely Dan. Their music is fusion of Jazz, Rock, Pop, Funk, R&B, Reggae. Their sound is unique to them

This is my fav SD song... Great review.

It’s a pleasure to see someone hear Steely Dan for the first time and the awakening that occurs

The icon, the legend, Larry Carlton! His playing on Steely Dan songs is of course legendary. His solo playing as amazing as well. You should check his live medley

The 1970s were a golden cornucopia of musical goodness

This is my favorite Steely Dan song. Both the music and the subject matter too

Is there gas in the car? Yeh there's gas in the car...

Steely Dan is a genre of their own.  Alone.  No other members.

enjoy your adventure into the Steely Dan Universe

That's the great Larry Carlton on the guitar solo. Considered by many to be the best solo in rock history.

Owsley Stanley was also the Dead's sound engineer early on and was the master mind behind the design of Wall of Sound.

This guitar solo is legend. It's your favorite guitar player's favorite guitar solo.  Been called the greatest guitar solo of all time by many.

Steely Dan is not in ANY way musically similar to the Grateful Dead or the Allman Brothers. In fact, Steely Dan and the The Grateful Dead couldn't be more different. Steely Dan were STUDIO ALBUM PERFECTIONISTS. They didn't tour endlessly like the Dead. In fact, THEY STOPPED TOURING ALTOGETHER after their 3rd album in 1974. Fagen and Becker hated touring and wanted to concentrate on studio perfection. So the original Steely Dan broke up after PRETZEL LOGIC and it just became a DUO with session musicians. They made 4 more fantastic albums in the 70s and they went into a pause in the 1980s. They decided to reform again in the early 90s and finally started touring again in 1993 with a massive Big Band complete with a horn section and a band full of jazz stalwarts who could reproduce their studio sound as close  as possible to the studio sound. They didn't Noodle around and extend songs to 30 minutes etc.
They were a HORNS oriented band. A lot of saxophones.
You haven't heard any of the horns songs yet. You're drawing conclusions based on 3 Steely Dan songs which are guitar oriented.
LISTEN TO MY OLD SCHOOL. LISTEN TO DOCTOR WU. NIGHT BY NIGHT.

STEELY DAN IS CLOSER TO WEATHER REPORT THAN THE GRATEFUL DEAD. CLOSER TO EARLY CHICAGO. SOME TRAFFIC. REALLY THERE WAS NO GROUP LIKE THEM. THEY WERE A COMPLETELY UNIQUE BAND.

A perfect song. Tells a great story.

I like the juxing of Carlton and Purdie along with other instruments on first solo then lyrics are thrilling

And so it begins. We have a live one, ladies and gents

Steely Dan are the kings of the fade-out tease! Listen to Don’t Take Me Alive for a fire guitar solo intro.

I'm living w/breast cancer, on meds, at least not Stage 4, And it's a hassle. But at the end of the day I've discovered these "reactions to SD" and enjoy the songs all over again, in a new way. It's so FRESH. How am I not sick of my favorite songs?
Sohum is gorgeous. And fun to listen to. And watch.
