Nice video.
Tiny comments:
1) NaOH can be used but is extremely exothermic reaction with aluminium; it dissolves the Al2O3, Al(=O)OH and Al(OH)3 protective passivating layer. As Na3AlO3 because amphoteric thus playing the role of a mild acid against strong base (what NaOH is so better wear protective gloves, labcoat and mostly googles; NaOH can permanently blind you by dissolving eyes cells membranes on simple contact turning it into liquid soap); that aluminate of Na hydrolyses with water and precipitates Al(OH)3 gel and reforms NaOH chewing a vast amount of aluminium with a tiny "catalytic" amount.
In fine the brut equation is:
Al + H2O --> Al2O3 + Al(O)OH + Al(OH)3 + H2(g)
Or in disguise:
Al + 3 H(+) (from water) --> Al(3+) + 3/2 H2(g) + heat.
2) same processus happens with HCl strong acid that dissolves the oxid-hydroxid layer as AlCl3 scraping the protective layer that hydrolyses as Al(OH)3 reforming the HCl that again can catalytically corrode Al by the very same kind of reaction but this time amphotericity of Al plays the other way arround because HCl is a strong acid.
3) PET bottles are composed of a plastic that shrinks in hot water not smart thus with an exothermic reaction heating the water extensively.
Not smart too because being a polyester; it readily hydrolyses into strong acidic or badic media weakening the structure a lot by forming ethylene glycol and terephtalic acid (or di Na terephtalate).
So quite a danger for a caustic to skin and eyes burning sodium hydroxyde recipient under pressure and weakened recipient ready to rupture with time.
