Good video sir, I followed you directions to the letter and made myself a good keeper, however, I mis measured by 1/16" too wide(yes, it made a difference). I'm not worried because no one will ever know but me.
I'd leave the needles on while knotting, tp take the tails back under the Xs before removing them and melting the ends so there's no way they'll pull free. You can also use a loop stick to water-form the keeper into a squarer shape.
To secure the needle on the thread, put the needle point through the thread about 5mm above the tip, and carefully make the stitch. making sure the tail doesn't go through. Repeat 5mm further up the thread, then pull on the tail so the stitches close up to the eye. As you work. the stitches tighten on the tail, ensuring it doesn't pull out through the eye, and when you're finished, pull the tail through the stitches, releasing it so the needle can be removed normally. It's useful in leatherwork, as the material gets one heck of a grip on the thread an unsecured needle pulls off the thread as often as not.
