Kaplex is a Bolivian travel YouTuber accustomed to showcasing extreme locations around the world, but in September 2026 he chose the most challenging destination in his own country: Lauca Ñ, in the Chapare region of Cochabamba, where Evo Morales has lived since November 2024, surrounded by security rings formed by coca growers' unions and with outstanding arrest warrants. His hour-long documentary revealed what few had filmed: checkpoints, men with makeshift spears and shields fashioned from barrels, a bustling commercial district and tents surrounding the so-called General Headquarters, and the former president himself recounting how he spent two weeks bedridden and even considered "planning his death." In this video, we reconstruct how he managed to gain access, what he filmed, and why the result divided Bolivia in a matter of hours.

Because Kaplex's story is not just about a difficult journey; it's about a creator who had to decide how far his camera would go and what he owed his audience. Politicians like Manfred Reyes Villa used it as proof that Morales's arrest wasn't carried out due to a lack of will; pro-Evo media outlets celebrated the video as a documentary of his life in the Chapare; and even fake images of the YouTuber's supposed arrest appeared on social media.

Kaplex himself later admitted that his video could be interpreted as favorable to Morales and that, in his opinion, the former president definitely wants to return to office. This is the story of how being highly controversial can be, at the same time, the best and worst idea of a career.
