When using a wooden paddle, we were always taught in Boy Scouts to use the handle end to push off. If the wood gets damaged by a rock, it will soak up water, making it easier to break. The paddle end is in the water more , and its thinner, so it would be quicker to break. But, you know, don't let me tell you what to do, just a suggestion :)

This is why I love living in Canada ...you can have a whole lake all to yourself! (Ontario lakes are so much warmer).

Learn how to perform the J stroke when you paddle. It is a firm pull toward the back with a Twist and make the motion of the end of a J in the water to keep your bow from turning too far. Look it up. Once you get good at the J stroke you can paddle on the same side and go in a straight line.
