In this tutorial, we dive deep into texturing realistic painted metal inside Substance Painter, using a historical WWII M24 stick grenade as our hero asset. This is Part 2 of the M24 Grenade texturing series β watch Part 1 first to build the foundation.
βΆ WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:
β’ Building a PBR painted metal base with realistic color, roughness, and height variations
β’ Creating paint microsurface details: unevenness, fingerprints, hair stuck under paint
β’ Simulating realistic paint damage using real photograph stencils (Large / Medium / Small spot system)
β’ Adding corrosion and oxidized metal exposed under damaged paint layers
β’ Creating realistic rust with color variation, saturation control, and peeling paint edge effects
β’ Peeling paint effect using anchor points, procedural masks, and subtract blending mode
β’ Building aged decals with ragged edges, paint wear, and AO-based separation
β’ Comprehensive dirt and weathering layers with curvature-based masking
β’ Applying sharpening filters on roughness and color channels for the final crisp look
