I travel to Cumberland Maryland to explore an old town once of much historic and industrial significance that fell on hard times and is now trying to re-invent itself. I meet warm and friendly locals but find that much of the town outside of the historic centre is either abandoned or heavily declined. I then take a drive around the Appalachian mountains towards West Virginia, where I encounter a seemingly forgotten side of America heavily affected by post-industrial blight.

The brainwashing is absolutely stunning, ask people what the problem is and the answers are always the same- lazy people on food stamps etc. How about this: Since 1975, $79 trillion in wealth has been redistributed from the bottom 90% to the top 1% in the United States. Median household income would be DOUBLE what it is today if income inequality had remained the same as it was in 1975.
Ever hear people mention any of that? Of course not cause they never heard of it. Apparently fox news neglected to cover it for some reason....

What a nice guy under the bridge. Super polite. Smart too, such a shame 😔

I’m from the area and you did an excellent job representing us and showing the true nature and state of the towns you visited.

This is so sad to me. My family is all from Cumberland, and I still have a lot of relatives there. I have such fond memories of visiting my grandmother in South Cumberland as a child. The corner stores with penny candy, the ice cream truck, the sno cone truck, and many of my aunts, uncles, and cousins all lived in the same area. It really was a magical place, and it is sad to see it deteriorate.

She had a good heart.

Bless the homeless guy under the bridge. I want to give him a hug.

The Wendy's worker lady sounds very happy at $15 an hour and struggling. Especially when she said she could go make $17 an hour but she shrugs it off.

Been watching for years . Never would I have thought you be in my backyard. Was hoping to see you come to Frostburg, Md . Great job brother. Keep up the good work!

Coupla good ol' boys at the end, that lady on her porch-- those are the welcoming American people all the World Cup tourists found. Sure, a lot of areas are down at the heels and a few bad apples are bound to be around (they can't all be in prison at one time!), but you'll find what you set off looking for, one way or the other, when you get up in them hills an' hollows!

Spent a lot of time in Cumberland in the 70's and 80s coming from the Baltimore area. Never any homeless then! A vibrant downtown. Nice family shops. We enjoyed it as well as Deep Creek Lake nearby. Sad to see it as you show it now.
