Medina Azahara was born to demonstrate the power of a caliph. Its palaces, gardens, and halls received embassies from Byzantium and the Christian kingdoms, but this monumental city barely survived seventy years. Abd al-Rahman III built it near Córdoba as a physical representation of his authority. Decades later, a civil war led to its sacking and destruction. Its marble and columns were reused, and the earth eventually concealed its remains for almost nine centuries.
In this episode, we explore the history of Medina Azahara, from its construction in 936 to its disappearance. We will discover the purpose of the Rich Hall, the truth behind the legend of the caliph's favorite, whether a room with a pool of mercury existed, and why we still know less than a tenth of the city.
We also explain the difference between Medina Azahara and Medina Alzahira, the city linked to Almanzor, whose possible location continues to be investigated. What might still be buried beneath the more than one hundred hectares that remain to be explored? Share your theory in the comments.
