The Upper Middle Rhine Valley was the first German cultural landscape to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in June 2002. A unique feature: Here, in one of Europe's major tourist destinations, the interplay between humankind and nature is celebrated, rather than, as is so often the case, pristine wilderness.

Rüdesheim, the gateway to the World Heritage Site, attracts more than 3 million tourists to the region annually. From here, visitors can take a boat trip on the Rhine, hike along trails through vineyards and forests, and, of course, stroll through the famous Drosselgasse in the old town.

The people we portray and accompany in their work are passionate about their homeland; they are "World Heritage Patrons," ambassadors for their region, and hosts: the young winemaker who, as the "savior of Riesling," doesn't shy away from the steepest slopes; the hiking guide who, even at 70, never tires of inspiring people on his tours through the World Heritage Site and has even revived a small, neglected vineyard himself. The forester, who combats the effects of climate change on nature and the landscape through new projects, raising awareness and encouraging people to be more mindful. It's the captain on the Rhine, who every day takes hundreds of guests along the water through the unique landscape, ensuring that tourists experience the Upper Middle Rhine Valley as a place of breathtaking beauty. And there's the innkeeper, who caters to the throngs of visitors in the Drosselgasse and, despite all the criticism of mass tourism, pours her heart and soul into her hotel and inn. For all of them, the World Heritage title is a great responsibility, a challenge – but also an inspiration.
