The Best WR Duo In The NFL That Hated Each Other | Keyshawn Johnson & Wayne Chrebet

Press Box Chronicles with Jeff Pearlman

Today, we're talking about my (unfortunately) favorite football team again, the New York Jets. Except today, we're diving into the greatest wide receiver duo in franchise history: Keyshawn Johnson and Wayne Chrebet, the former No. 1 pick and undrafted free agent that made it work despite hating each other.

Add in the fact that Wayne Chrebet is immortalized in ELF. 😉

Curtis Martin was one of my favorite players of that era. When people talk about the all-time great running backs in NFL history, he's often left off that list. He had 10 straight 1,000+ yard seasons.

Wayne also ended up having a nice duo with Laverneous Coles for a few years and they are good friends to this day and do a podcast together.

Jeff, we’ll put you down as undecided on Rich Kotite.

One can only hope to join the ranks of literary titans like Keyshawn Johnson and Snooki.

Jeff I came across your show a couple of months ago and wanted to let you know that I really enjoy it. For a few years now I have been bogged down in toxic, political podcasts to pass the time. It’s been a breath of fresh air to hear your interesting stories instead. I’m a high school teacher and the episodes are the perfect length to listen to on my lunch break. Keep up the good work!

Jeff

It’s so rare these days to come across truly genuine people in your business. In any business really.

After watching 6-7 of your videos it became clear that you are one of those people.

As a guy about your age with a lot of the same type of memories growing up of sports and life in general. This channel has been just a true blessing of reflection and nostalgia.

Thank you. Genuinely. Thank you.

Johnson and Chrebet being the best receiving duo in the NFL in 1998 is the wildest take I have heard in a long time.

Chrebet was nicknamed Mr Third Down because most of his receptions were third down conversions. And after that 2000 game against the Buccaneers, he was nicknamed The Green Lantern.

Wayne was the first Edelman. His Monday night game v the Dolphins was epic. That catch though .... ❤❤❤❤

"We took care of each other" is an extremely meaningful statement.

Wayne Chrebet was COLD! All-Time No Gloves receiver.

I looked up Rich Kotite - first thing I see is a shirt saying, "I survived the Rich Kotite era." 😂

I went to Hofstra during the Div III days of the early 80s. We had to wait for the Jets to finish practice before we could take our field. Last thing they did was practice field goals. I would field kicks in the end zone for Pat Leahy. He would be a good topic for you!

Great video, you definitely captured the emotion of a lot of Jets fans, like myself. I also remember when we drafted Keyshawn and the Jets hosted a draft party at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square with alumni and players meeting and greeting the fans. Wayne Chrebet was there and I remember at the end of the day seeing him by himself and I approached him and said he was still our #1 WR. I got his autograph that day and remembered how nice he was to all the fans. Wayne will always be the Jets flashlight! Keep up your great content Jeff! Thank you!
