A lone warrior. A kingdom betrayed. And a hero who cannot be kept in chains.

Based on beloved Russian folk epics (byliny), Ilya Muromets follows Russia's greatest legendary hero as he sets out for Kiev to warn Prince Vladimir of the savage Tugar invaders burning villages and trampling harvests. Along the road he performs extraordinary feats — yet treacherous boyars turn the prince against him, and Ilya is thrown into a dungeon. With the enemy striking harder than ever, only one man can save the realm.

🎬 Director: Alexander Ptushko — the Soviet master of large-scale fairy-tale spectacle whose widescreen epics defined an entire generation of fantasy filmmaking.

This film is brilliant on so many levels and far ahead of its time. Landscapes, special effects and costumes! At 1956 Russian film makers were killing it and certain film makers can definitely learn from them!❤

This movie haunted me for years. I saw it as a child, I'm 74, and it blew me away. Fantastical.

Channel 9 televised this movie on their then running Million Dollar Movie format wherein a movie ran for the entire week before being replaced with the next weeklong running feature. Los Angeles television was so different back then.
This movie left indelible impressions on my mind therefore making it impossible to forget it.

Opening scene is almost the blueprint for Conan the Barbarian, but 30 ears earlier.

BTW: Seeing it now that I also know Alexander Nevsky, I see this film pays a lot of homage to that film.

1:1 - Precisely what I admire and hold true. A virtuous warrior choosing the challenge of a hard path and besting even certain death. The style is gorgeous with the magnificent landscape camera shots. The props looks authentic bronze and iron age if seen from afar. It is really astounding work. I am proud. :cat-orange-whistling:

American filmmaker and storyteller, George Lucas said he was a fan of Soviet Cinema and how aside from not being able to go against the party line, one could basically do as they please. Which is probably why Russian filmography has so many genres. And I’m certain directors and writers learned to “criticize the party” in other ways.

I will gladly watch this film. Big fan of medieval history which includes Russia! As well as fantasy. 😎👍

P.S. I love how both Russia and America were doing Epic/Pseudo-Historical and mythic films in the 50s. I love it. Peace ✌🏻

The battle scenes are incredible, especially considering no trick photography or cgi. Some of the set pieces - the creation of the "mound," for example, are marvelous - and even the opposing forces for once look like, well, opposing forces! Thanks for the upload, and keep them coming!

I've only seen the engliish dub, the Sword and the Dragon. It's a stunningly beautiful fairytale.

A defining theatrical film of my lost youth in Saint Louus, MO USA. my only wish now is that the great Gliere Symphony #2 might be used as the soundtrack: two masterpieces in one , so to speak.
