The first woman has to find some new friends.

As someone who has been travelling to Thailand for the past 20 years, NEVER, EVER let your possessions out of your control. Never. And NEVER trust anyone in the bars. Full stop.

So basically if you get into trouble overseas, innocent or not, you're stuffed. The Embassy may bring you a toothbrush.

Getting jail time because someone put drugs in your drink is insane

I am so fortunate to have travelled overseas many times when I was a young adult without incident. I no longer have any interest in overseas travel. These stories reinforce my desire to stay in Australia. The risk of being raped is everywhere, but being imprisoned for having been raped??!!!🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

Don’t mess about overseas and be grateful that you live in a better place

My quick two cents - Women, never travel to countries with draconian regimes that have well known judicial and legal systems that are geared against women. And for anyone don’t commit even petty crimes in developing countries that again typically have known highly corrupt police and judicial systems. It’s never going to end well…..

The cocaine guy had the nerve to complain about conditions and somehow continue to use cocaine While in Prison?

The embassy should provide an interpreter for Australian people abroad and also basic Legal counsel for people

I will NEVER play the tourist in a country where I have no rights!

Two lessons learned here -
1. Know the local laws in the countries you plan to visit
2. Don't expect the Australian government to help you if you get in trouble.

how awful for these women.. and the embassy should be ashamed

This is such valuable information for everyone to know. My takeaways from this are:
1. Always keep your own bag on you. Just like at the airport, anyone can put anything in your bag and YOU are accountable for it.
2. Don't sign anything without translation.
3. If you accept an offer of employment in an unfamiliar system, research the legal and cultural context.

I've been living overseas for 4 years now.
Follow all rules and law. You are a guest in their country.

The Ambassador speaking is so right. The additional thing here is understanding the Australian cultural way of thinking - Australians go travelling and are so naive. We take our cultural beliefs with us that everyone is equal, laws are fair and just and unfortunately expect that, of the rest of the world. I lived overseas for 3 years, the entire family completed cross cultural training before we left. Living outside Australia opened my eyes. My mother would say we are the lucky country but this means nothing when you’re raised within a safe culture.
