Mahishasura became the king of all demons. He formed a massive army of demons and attacked the netherworld and the mortal world, subjugating them all. Then he attacked Indraloka, the abode of the gods. Lord Vishnu and Shiva also supported the gods in this battle, but they all suffered defeat at the hands of Mahishasura, and Mahishasura also gained control of the heavens. He became the ruler of the three worlds.

Lord Vishnu, along with all the gods, worshipped Goddess Mahashakti, the primordial cause of all. A divine radiance emanated from the bodies of all the gods and appeared in the form of an extremely beautiful woman. Himavan gave Goddess Mahamaya a lion to ride, and all the gods offered their weapons to Mahamaya. Pleased with the gods, Goddess Durga assured them that she would soon free them from the fear of Mahishasura.

Goddess Durga reached the Himalayas and roared loudly. A fierce battle broke out between Mahishasura and his demons. One by one, all of Mahishasura's warriors were killed. Then, forced to fight the Goddess, Mahishasura himself was forced to fight. Mahishasura attempted to deceive the Goddess by assuming various illusory forms, but ultimately, the Goddess severed Mahishasura's head with her discus. It is said that all the gods had given Goddess Katyayani a weapon each, and armed with those divine weapons, the Goddess fought Mahishasura.
