Darrell Waltrip vs. Bathurst — He Wasn’t Ready for THIS

Balefire's Forge

Darrell Waltrip thought he’d seen it all in racing… until Bathurst.
The NASCAR legend straps into a V8 Supercar for a full-speed lap at Mount Panorama — and what happens next is absolutely priceless.

In this video, I react to his hot lap around one of the toughest, most dangerous circuits in the world. The hills, the blind corners, the sheer speed — even a three-time NASCAR champion isn’t ready for what Bathurst throws at him. As a Canadian watching this for the first time, I couldn’t stop laughing at his commentary, his expressions, and just how insane this track really is.

Whether you’re a NASCAR fan, a Supercars addict, or just love seeing racing icons out of their comfort zone, you need to see this.

Darrell Waltrip is a NASCAR legend… but Bathurst is a whole other game. 😂
What was YOUR favorite moment from his lap — the commentary, the corners, or the look on his face?

And now you know why Shane Van Gisbergen is an absolute savage in the Nascar street courses

The elevation difference from the bottom to the top of the mountain is about 600 feet.
Mark Larkham is a former driver, team owner and technical advisor to the tv broadcaster. He knows that track as well as anyone

Bathurst is to car racing what the Isla of Mann is to bike racing! The absolute pinnacle of

Mark Larkham was a former Supercar Driver for many years as well as a driver in other classes of Racecars, and so knows exactly what he is talking about. He is funny, serious, and very informative and takes you on a journey explaining new race parts, rules, etc. He is the best person you could ever hope to have as a host for race car day.

This is why SVG is so good at NASCAR

Larko is a legend. The V8 broadcaster tried to sack him a few years ago - and the fan reaction made them change their tune damn fast! Nobody does a better job of explaining Supercars than Larko - and he's driven (and won races) in them.

I have only driven around the Mount Panorama circuit once... and it was in a bus.
My passengers asked if we could go around and I said "Sure." I figured I'd go slow and we would just have a good time seeing it in the proverbial flesh. All went well until... we got to the S'es. Even though I had seen it hundreds of times on TV, I just was not prepared for the drop in elevation on that one curve. Needless to say that although we were crawling along, the suspension still bottomed out. 😳

Now do the same lap in a race with 20 other guys pushing their cars to the absolute limit, with some of them coming apart right in front of you in spectacular fashion, and it goes to a whole other level. Bathurst is for guys with a death wish.

That's a big lobster from Kingston SE in South Australia, his name is Larry. True dinks.

Any Aussie guy worthy of being called a driver will find their favourite run through their hills and take their car to 9 or 10 10ths through.
The Adelaide hills are my backyard, there’s some great technical sections

That pick at the end is of a sculpture of a spiny lobster .

Not only is Larko a good personality and presenter but when he breaks things down with examples and experiences it makes your understanding of what these cars can do and what the Australian races do - it’s truly a wonderful education he gives!

I saw Elton John play live at Bathurst in 2019.. first thing he said was I love you Bat-hurst 🤦‍♀️ oh dear you’d think they would have told him how to say it 😂😂

The Bathurst race track is a public road most of the year, and it's a bucket list thing for Aussie men to do. I did it two years ago and it's something I'll never forget. You are restricted to 60 kmh around the track though, because there are farms and houses on the inside of the track, and the locals use it to get into town. The view from the top is spectacular, hence the name Mt. Panorama.

They obviously wanted to do a slower lap, so they drove in the Holden 😂😂😂

What's a Hoon? I have a feeling you may of been in your younger days. A hoon is someone who loves fast cars, burnouts and speed often on but not limited to public roads.

For a completely different look at Bathurst track look up Peter Brock's commentary in 1986, while he's racing!

Cool as a cucumber like he's having a Sunday drive, explains the circuit and even waves to the crowd.
