On July 30, 2026, an avalanche struck Broad Peak, the world’s twelfth-highest mountain, in Pakistan’s Karakoram. At that moment, ten people from four independent expeditions were on the mountain: guides, high-altitude workers, and clients from five different countries. Among them was Nirmal Purja, one of the world’s best-known high-altitude climbers, for whom Broad Peak had not even been part of the original plan.

Satellite trackers recorded the exact moment the avalanche occurred. The teams below did not learn about it until thirteen hours later. In this video, we reconstruct the entire tragedy: why all four expeditions ended up on the same slope at the same time, how the search unfolded over the following days, who these ten people were, and why some of them have still not been recovered from the mountain.
