Yeah but could you imagine Ringo in the Who? Charlie in Zeppelin? The right drummer in the right band!

moon played what was needed in the who..same with bonham with zep...

Hahaha, I'm a drummer myself, every drummer fits in a particular band and genre. Moon, for Who, Bonzo for Zep and Watts is for Stones. Simple.

The Who is considered one of, if not the greatest live band from 1967 to 1978.

I get the point but it still seems like BS to me. Imagine Charlie in Zep, or any hard rock band. Hitting hard is warranted when playing hard rock. Pace had the best versatility. He can do it all. He can demonstrate finesse in both soft and hard playing.

Magic Bus by the Who…Tell me again about Moonies drumming Keith.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

"It takes a pretty good drummer to be better than no drummer at all."  Chet Baker

You can make the same kind of arguments about every member of a rock and roll band.  Would you like to hear Peter Frampton play lead with the Stones?  Pete Townshend playing rhythm guitar for the Beatles?  David Gilmour playing lead for Nirvana?  Ringo playing with Rush?  The right chemistry and interplay of skills are what separate the few bands that really capture your attention from the zillions of bands that are competent but ultimately not that interesting because there is something missing beyond just ability to master the rudiments of their instruments.

You said it: Musical intelligence and to know when and when not to play. That´s what all musicians need to know, not only drummers.

It all comes down to the band and their style of music. Watts was perfect for the Stones, Baker with Cream, and Bonham with Zepp. Zeppelin were a blues and primarily heavy rock band so Bonham was perfect for that band.

I'm a drummer myself, and I had to come to the realization that being loud and explosive doesn't neccesarily mean that you are great.  Fitting in with your group is what matters.  So now have a real appreciation for Ringo and Charlie.  Real talent

It depends on the makeup of the band .  You can’t sit behind a power trio and knock out a simple beat.

Oh, please...to hear a sloppy guitarist like richard criticize Keith Moon or John Bonham is  just silly on his part.

We all had pet names in one band I was in back in the 80s.

Our drummer was called Bam Bam like the toddler in the Flintstones.

One gig when we had to go on 2 hours later than planned and we all had too much booze n 'stuff' in the motel room waiting.

We had to pause half way through the set to gaff Bam Bam's hands as he'd given himself blood blisters from hitting the kit so hard...

Charlie Watts, was a jazz drummer, and was great for , ah Keith played for Jeff Beck, and at one time Keith was almost the drummer for Led Zeppelin!  And when the Who , played on Mick Jaggers Rocknroll Circus, Mick said he would never play live with the Who, the song they played live was A Quick One, While he's Away, In 1968 the Who played in Duluth, with Hermans Hermits, and a great band from the US the blues Magoos, I actually went up on stage , and helped move "the Pictures of Lilly" Premier drum kit, Keith was who I was compared to, while I was a drummer, but it was really just me. Keith was a lead drummer, he not only played the song, he orchestrated it, he played in and around the beat, he was a big fan of the Surf Music. Listen to I Can See for Miles, nobody, and I mean nobody can play it, like Keith. RIP.........this is my favorite group, I bought their album, because the drummers hobby was breeding chickens.A Quick One While She's Away , genius. The Who, they sounded, wrote lyrics, and played like no other group on the planet. I rest my case.

He's a guitarist who never really listened to the drums. Like Townshend who bitched about Moon until he did a doco about the band and isolated the drums. He had an epiphany on film and admitted he didn't realise the genius of Moons' composition.

Certainly no one could have worked so successfully with Jimi Hendrix than Mitch Mitchell. Except possibly Charlie Watts…

Thank goodness we all have differing opinions. And that there are hundreds of other bands beyond the Stones and Beatles in our collections.
I believe Charlie asked for another drummer to replace him on 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' (Jimmy Miller).

Moon is my favorite.  To KR it might have sounded like a bunch of bashing about.  To me, I hear a complexity where Moon keeps the beat and also plays lead.  Townshend said he wouldn't maintain the beat but Entwistle said he kept the beat, you just had to listen for it.
