Message preached following two dreams, August 15, 2026, at the Evangelical Church of Rabat, Morocco.
Excuses, the worst enemy of the fear of God.
Why do we so easily seek to justify ourselves when we know we have done wrong? From Genesis 3 onward, we find the mechanics of sin: the devil seduces before the sin, and then after the sin, man seeks an excuse. Adam accuses the woman, the woman accuses the serpent… yet each must answer for their actions before God.
In this sermon, we will see how our frustrations, weaknesses, wounds, shortcomings, or desires can become the ground upon which the enemy builds a justification. A weakness can explain temptation, but it never justifies sin.
Achan saw, desired, took, and then hid. Saul blamed the people. Aaron tried to explain the golden calf. Even today, we can easily say, “I did it because…”
But the fear of God leads us to live the same way whether people are watching us or not.
“The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the evil and the good” (Proverbs 15:3). God sees what is hidden. He knows our motives, our thoughts, and our hearts. The real question, then, is: Will I make excuses, or will I fear God?
“Lord, I know you see me. I no longer want to justify myself. I want to obey you.” »
Passages covered: Genesis 3:1-13, Proverbs 6:30-31, Joshua 7:21, James 1:13-15, 1 Samuel 15, Luke 10:25-29, Proverbs 15:3, Job 31:1, 2 Samuel 11:1-5, Psalm 36, Hebrews 4:13, Jeremiah 20:12, Revelation 2:23.
