Beginner tutorials can pile up the names of carving cuts until it feels like you need to learn them all before you can start. In this video, we take a basswood block and one knife and carve a complete ghost using just three basic cuts. We also show what happens when a cut goes past the pencil line, how a stop cut can help prevent that, and what these three cuts can't do on their own.

In this video we:
strop the knife before the first cut
show the push cut, the pull cut and the stop cut up close, and which thumb does what in each
repeat a cut that ran past the line, this time with a stop cut first
explain where these three cuts stop being enough
carve a ghost from the kit pattern, with a label for each cut, and paint its face
