This is the first time someone has ever explained to winter sowing in such a easy manner. I always thought you had to have heat lamps and space and big windows and more heat. Past explanations have always felt super expensive just to start a plant. Thank you kindly for taking us through this very simple set up. My daughter and I are going to have so much fun!!!

Seeing something like this that I can actually do now (it's snowing outside today) gives me such joy!

Easy plant tag idea is old plastic mini-blinds - cut really easily and easy to mark on with a Sharpie marker! I find them at garage sales and thrift stores!

What a great primer on winter sowing! You covered everything. For first timers I would also add for when to water that in addition to the weight of the jug (should feel heavy), if you don't see condensation inside the jug, it's time to water. Also, heed the advice to use a garden marker or china pencil or else come planting time, you may end up with nameless jugs. Ask me how I know. 🙂 This is my 3rd year winter sowing. I've done all vegs in the past, but this year I'm adding flowers. This is such a fun, easy and rewarding way to garden. ~Kathy

😊 aww that is just as exciting as opening presents 🎁 ☺️ ❤ 🌼 🌸 🌻 🌹 🏵

Instead of taping the jugs closed, I make a hole above and below the cut (opposite side of the “hinge”). Insert a twist tie into the hole below the cut and out the hole above the cut. This allows you to easily open the containers to water or to check soil moisture, or check on the seedlings.

I finished winter sowing 8 different perennials just before Christmas. This is my first time and I will be indoor seed starting soon. First time for that also. I’ve got my fingers crossed and this will be a lesson on patience for me.
Seeing what your past results were got me VERY EXCITED.
Thanks for great content!!

Delphinium and columbine (Aquilegia) are in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). Members of this family typically have rudimentary (underdeveloped) embryos when their seeds are shed. They germinate best if they experience a warm, moist period in the fall before cold winter stratification. So next year you might have better luck if you sow the seeds after frost but before consistent freezing temperatures set in. Otherwise, you have a brilliant method for growing plants without a greenhouse or expensive indoor lighting system!
