Instead of my usual “This is not a review” video for Gavan Infinity, I wanted to make something more personal. This is not a see you later, it’s a goodbye forever -

Until I work on the next Story of Sentai video.

Shotaro Ishinomori once said, "When an era needs it, Kamen Rider will definitely return." I believe the same applies to Super Sentai. Someday they'll come back...

Super Sentai will return in Avengers Doomsday

Super Sentai is gone for now. Not gone forever.

That pause in ryusoulger is just funny

Low ratings and low toy sales are a bad combination. That’s what killed the Metal Heroes in 1996.

I don’t believe that Super Sentai is gone forever. They said that Kamen Rider was dead after Black RX and it made a comeback. They said that Metal Heroes was dead and now they’re back. So I don’t take it as goodbye, I take it as see you later.

3:53 There have hardly been any franchise running continuously for more than 50 years without a break. Ultraman had a hiatus. Doctor Who had a hiatus. Kamen Rider had a hiatus. Gundam had a hiatus at its very beginning.

The ideas, the core values always lie somewhere around, and if the spirit of the age demands, there will be a creator who will take these ideas and do something with them.

Super Sentai may have ended for now, yet this end is not The End.

Long live the hope, friendship and passion embodied in the series.

One thing that really stood out to me is how Gozyu Wolf didn't pass the torch to Gavan Infinity. Instead, Gavan Infinity just grabbed his Sentai Ring and walked off...

This isn’t “good bye.”
It’s “see you later”

I was in Japan the day it was announced. I was dumbfounded.

The American public isn't used to this, and it's true that a 50-year-old franchise going on hiatus like this is extraordinary, even making it into mainstream media because of how big it was, but the Tokusatsu universe has always been like this. Kamen Rider suffered setbacks with X, Amazons, and ended with Stronger, having a long hiatus. Then it tried to revive with a reboot that didn't happen but lasted two series before going on hiatus again. At that time, both Super Sentai and Metal Heroes were born. Kamen Rider tried to return again, but a fight with Ishinomori caused another hiatus, and the Metal Heroes continued until the master himself passed away. A series that was meant to be a tribute to him ended up being more successful than expected, and that was the triumphant return of a revamped Kamen Rider incorporating elements of the Metal Heroes, which no longer had a reason to continue. Similarly, Shushutorian ended Fushigi Comedy's long series of stories after magical girl anime lost ground to Sailor Moon. I think Gozyuger was a good ending; it had strong character development, it was subversive, reminding me of Inoue Sr., and it was kind of sad to say goodbye to something we never imagined would end.

Dang so i guess the comparison of saber being a sentai team was valid afterall lol

Nothing lasts forever. What matters is that they gave us one Hell of an entertaining run before they bowed out :)

1:37 I made this chart because I thought the data is interesting. Now I see this chart everywhere, haunting me like a spectre😅😅

Jeez! Fourze and ZI-O really shot up

Thank you, Super Sentai. For your contribution to shaping Tokusatsu to what it today. I salute you. 🫡🔴🔵🟡🟢♀️

In my opinion, Super Sentai died mostly due to a combination of factors coming together.
1. Decline of TV in general. Not the main reason but it’s definitely what started the snowball effect
2.  rise of video games against toys
3. Kamen Rider simply overshadows it. Can be a lot darker too so appeals to the older audiences and makes children feel like they’re watching something cool.
4. Same basic formula since 1979. Has never changed formula actually if we don’t include the Giant Robo stuff in that. Same premise, different gimmick in many cases
5. Power Rangers being stuck in production hell for three years. They’ve got nothing in common besides sharing footage but, for me and a lot of the western world, it’s how I came to realise Sentai was ever even a thing. The first time I ever heard of it was when I was messing around on the wiki and was like “what the hell is a Zyuranger?!” With hasbro planning to abandon Sentai footage altogether, I can’t imagine that helped the decision
6. Power Rangers existing. It’s more accessible, understandable to general audiences and is damaging. People see Tokusatsu as a thing for children only because look at funny men in coloured spandex. By comparison, Kamen Rider has one awful American version creatively named Masked Rider which lasted one incomplete season before being forgotten as anything more than a punchline
7. Decline of superhero media in general. This goes back to what I said earlier. Kamen Rider can change since it’s an extremely fluid premise since it’s basically “guy in power armour punches things” at its most deductive. Sentai can only change so much since it’s has extremely clearly defined “rules.”
8. It’s been fifty bloody years. It probably has the record for longest running live-action tv show of all time at this point. Only year a season hasn't aired is 1979 due to Japanese Spider-Man replacing it
9. Someone high up at Toei has clearly been wanting a Project Red-like thing for years now. They likely pointed to Sentai slump and said to whoever calls the shots on programming at godai “look how Sentai is. Maybe we need to give it some rest.”
10. Franchise bloat. Dunno how else to put it. If you’re a casual just learning of it existing and then you see this 50+ year 45+ team history and realise there’s semi-regular crossovers… Yeah. Kamen Rider has the same issue but it’s rarer and usually appears in the context of larger films like Kamen Rider’s 50th instead of team by team
Perfect storm of things that killed one of the longest running live-action TV shows in history

This is not a farewell, it's a see you later ❤💙💛♥💚

And here i was waiting for another metal heroes.
