Kids that live out on a farm especially back then learn to shoot early. Hunting for food, killing dangerous wildlife, or protecting yourself when the law is far away are some reasons why.

The Gibson/Costner era was a great time to be a movie lover.

God rest Heath Ledger. God rest also to Skye McCole Bartusiak (who played Susan and passed back in 2014 at about 22) and Tom Wilkinson as well.

“You’re MY child!” Is such an underrated line in this movie

To be fair, towards the end of the Revolution the British DID pull more brutal tactics. Which in turn, did start more people toward the cause.
Can we also take a moment to remember 25 years in, how many of this phenomenal cast we have lost since then.

Heath Ledger
Skye McCole Bartusiak
René Auberjonois
Tchéky Karyo
Tom Wilkinson
Jay Arlen Jones

RIP🙏🏾

America didn't start conscription for their armies until the Civil War 85 years later. The Continental Army and the Militias were all volunteers.

Jason Isaacs was BORN to play contemptible villains.

This movie actually does get a lot of things historically correct. The American colonists really did carry out an insurgency campaign in the Carolinas using militia to keep the British in the south. That was all legit. The strategy of having the militia fire twice, then retreating at the Battle of Cowpens was 100% accurate. It just wasn't "Benjamin Martin's" idea; it was Daniel Morgan's.

Crying along to movies with Mary from the other side of the planet is becoming one of my favorite hobbies.

This is a pretty good one. Gibsons character is a composite of at least three Revolutionary fighters, and the battle at the end was a composite of two major battles in the southern area. It is a bit intense but so was the war. Tarleton was based on an actual British officer who was active in the Carolinas and was nicknamed "The Butcher" mainly for killing surrendered soldiers and militia. BTW the real guy survived the war and remained an officer. Childbirth in that time was often fatal, and the father would need a loving mother for his children. It was not unusual for the sister or a cousin of the wife to fill that role. It was not considered odd.

R.I.P. Heath Ledger, you fought a good fight

In colonial America, young boys grew up with a hunting rifle in their hands. It was a tool, not a dangerous animal.

Mel did well bringing tragedy to cinema. Not every story is sunshine.

The passion in Gibson’s voice when he says, “you’re MY child!” always hits me after the first watch because we know what happens…

Benjamin Martin was partly based on Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, who was based in Berkeley County, where I lived for over thirty years. The movie's swamp island hideout was in Cypress Garden Park, and became a popular wedding site after the movie. The ruins built for the film stood for quite a few years.

That actress who played that little girl Dad leaving scene was so good. Unfortunately, she died at 21.

I kid you not; my family was once in London around the Fourth of July and while channel surfing in our Air BNB, we stumbled upon this film. It was actually on British television in the Fourth of July.

The Southern Theatre of the American Revolutionary War was a civil war, with a lot of engagements fought between Patriot and Loyalist militias, as opposed to regular army troops.
