We present a special commemoration of the end of the war: "Sugamo Prison Today - Walking Through the Town Where Class A War Criminals Bereaved." It's the summer of the 81st year since the end of the war. Sugamo Prison, where "Class A war criminals" were once imprisoned and executed, is now the site of Sunshine City in Ikebukuro, a bustling area popular with young people. This time, with non-fiction writer Takashi Hayasaka as our coordinator, we walked from the Ikebukuro entertainment district to the memorial monument in Higashi-Ikebukuro Central Park, tracing the memories of Sugamo Prison. On December 23, 1948, the death sentences of seven "Class A war criminals" were carried out at this site. What really happened on that day? And who exactly was Hideki Tojo? This book explores the truth and falsehoods of the post-war image of Tojo, the truth behind his attempted suicide, his arguments at the Tokyo Trials, the mystery of the wine he drank last, the post-war lives of his descendants, and even the interactions between his great-grandson, Hidetoshi, and President Truman's grandson. Walking through the history hidden beneath the bustling city streets, we contemplate the nature of war and the question of war responsibility.
