I know what I was doing 48 years ago on July 2. I was there at the Oakland Coliseum for this concert.  First was the Outlaws, then Santana, followed by Lynard Skynard then closed out with Peter Frampton. I was a fireman on a off-day.

I'm so glad I grew up in the 70s,good music was everywhere

No phones! No social media. Just people having a great time! Enjoying life!

I'll always watch someone's first time Free Bird.  Glad you like it. 💥💥💥👍😎

When the tempo picks up the bass player kills it that's how you rock a bass line

To me this was the pinnacle of rock . Look at the band, crowd.  No tattoos, faces don't like a tackle box, no crazy hair color, just real musicians and real fans. No phones to distract from being in the moment of a great performance.

Southern Rock at its finest. Three underrated guitarist and bassist.  Billy Powel was a classically trained pianist .

The fans had listened hundreds of times to this track and knew exactly what was coming!

Live analog mix in open-air venue, no Autotune, no pre-recorded tracks ... sounds okay to me.

Graduating in 1977 this was the perfect song for our class. Saying goodbye to high school sweetheart and friends.

Make no mistake. Their concerts were exhausting. But a blast!

Ronnie Van Zant - vocals and leader of the band; Allen Collins - guitar; Gary Rossington - guitar; Steve Gaines - guitar; Artimus Pyle - drums; Leon Wilkeson - bass; Billy Powell - piano; Their last performance was South Carolina’s Greenville Memorial Auditorium on Oct. 19 1977 Free Bird lasted for 20 mins The next day boarded their plane that was unsafe the Fuel gauge was broke. The only way to check the fuel was with a stick. The plane ran out of fuel the engines were burning too rich and wasting precious fuel. One engine shut down then the other did.  The plane went down over pine trees killing the members of the band, lead singer Ronnie Van Zant , guitarist Steve Gaines, and vocalist Cassie Gaines, that day was the saddest in Southern Rock. I was 20 when I heard about it on the radio. I cried like a baby.

They are close because he is singing to the note...he is watching the fingers for HIS notes. It is genius.

Out of all the folks I saw on here that 'reacted' to this song, you're only the 2nd that pointed out the guitar following his vocals. First about drummer...Good for you!

ronnie had complete control of the band  if you notice whe he did hand signals to let them know when to play harder when to pause went to stop  he wanted perfection at all times

Your brief comments encapsulate everything we loved about Lynyrd Skynyrd.

So much dynamics. And so much sunburn.

Few performances give the visceral power shown here, between the band and crowd.
Synergy on display

Your vote of appreciation for bassist Leon Wilkeson is very welcome! He's particularly flashing nearer the end (starting at 17:36). Drums by Artimus Pyle. Once the second half begins, please keep your hands and arms in the car and away from your recording device! Do not stop the performance, but let the band race to the finish line!
