"FEAR OF THE LORD" Doesn't Mean What You Think

Does "fear of the Lord" really mean just respect? Most Bible teachers say yes. The Hebrew word behind the phrase says something far more surprising , and understanding it will change the way you read almost every page of Scripture.

This is one of the most repeated commands in the entire Bible. Hundreds of verses call you to fear God. Hundreds more tell you not to be afraid. And in the original Hebrew, both commands use the exact same root word. That is not a translation accident. It is the hinge the whole thing turns on.

The wisdom books of Scripture , Proverbs, Psalms, Job , cluster around this phrase more than almost any other. And the people who knew it best were not nervous or fearful in their lives. David wrote songs in a cave. Daniel was calm in a den of lions. Whatever this fear produced in them, it looked like steadiness, not panic.

At the foot of Mount Sinai, Moses handed Israel a single sentence that holds the entire paradox: do not fear, so that the fear of God may be before you. Both halves use the same Hebrew root. He was not correcting himself. He was drawing a line through the middle of the word and showing two completely different things living inside it.

📖 KEY VERSE
"Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of Him may be before you, that you may not sin." , Exodus 20.20 (NKJV)
