Cuir Bouilli or boiled leather was leather treated in a special and mysterious way that was used for armour from the classical world onward and also for highly decorated scabbards and leather cases.

It comes from a text kept at the Ashmolean museum and although it is said to be a recipe for a doublet of fense, it sounds similar to what you're talking about.
