Suffering from debilitating neck pain? According to Taiwan's National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA), the number of people treated for cervical disc disorders rose from 113,000 in 2015 to 122,000 in 2019, with associated costs increasing from NT$380 million to NT$440 million. However, only a small percentage of patients, accounting for approximately NT$20 million in NHIA expenses, received medication or injections. Conversely, over 13,000 cervical spine surgeries were performed, consuming over NT$400 million of NHIA funds, split almost evenly between spinal fusion and disc removal procedures. NHIA Director-General, Lee Bo-chang, stated that while medication and injections can provide temporary relief from nerve compression symptoms, they don't address the underlying problem. NHIA data indicates that many patients ultimately require surgery to definitively treat the condition.
