Why does so much of the modern world feel... the same?

From public transport to architecture to street signs. It feels as though we've traded personality for practicality. But was it always this way?

In this video, we travel back in time to the wonderful Crich Tramway Museum during their 1940s Weekend to explore Britain's once-beautiful tram networks and ask a much bigger question:

When did design stop telling stories?

Inspired by the ideas of ‪@SheehanQuirke‬ (The Cultural Tutor), this video explores how charm, craftsmanship, and thoughtful design gradually gave way to standardisation, convenience, and profit. From penny fares and colourful conductors to post-war rebuilding, mass housing, and the rise of the motor car, we'll discover how everyday life quietly became less visually rich—and what that change might mean for us today.

This isn't a call to reject progress. Modern life has brought incredible comfort and opportunity. Instead, it's an invitation to look a little closer at the world around us and ask whether our towns and cities could once again be places that inspire curiosity, delight, and wonder.

My mother-in-law and I were just talking about this. Not just the lack of color, but also the lack of care and artistry in what we build. It's easier to take pride in something that you can recognize took time and skill to make.

Some years ago, a friend of mine (a Dutchman) had just come back from a day trip to Manchester City Centre. He said to me, and I'll never forget it, "when visiting a big city, always look up and you will find beauty, because, above the ugly glass and steel frontage of the shops and offices at street level you will find the wonderful architecture of the past".

I'm convinced there is a deliberate and organized war against beauty just like the war against morals , values and mannerism

I cannot stand modern versions of things that were once beautiful- bus stops, lamp posts, bins… i love that you’re looking at this, because it happens so gradually and quietly until you turn around and wonder what happened. I watched a very good documentary here on YouTube called ‘how did the world get so ugly’ by Sheehan Quirke. He said that you can tell what a culture values by its design. The victorians made things both functional and ornate, even the sewage system - they believed that even the sewer workers deserved to enjoy beauty, and they took pride. If you look at things today - it shows that convenience is most valued.

My husband and I discuss this often. Everything used to be designed with style, no longer, now it's all utilitarian and sterile. I yearn for the days of architectural beauty, the flowing lines and lovely colors of the past.

I keep thinking about this! McDonald's, even, used to be a bright, colorful mini-theme-park with staff that wore fun hats and real uniforms. Now it's a plain, grey box on the outside, and a plain grey box on the inside, and the people that take your order are all giant touch screens. Gah!

I agree with your sentiments. The good news is that when likeminded people get together, they can cause change. Where I live a beautiful old building was going to be replaced by a gray box. When the word got out we said 'nope' and plans changed for the side of beauty. You keep getting the word out and more people will come to the bright side!

Hannah, thank you for sharing the places you visit. Time has moved on. There are many of us that wish we lived in a time where things were simple and people didn't rush around so. I am in America, North Carolina, they would rather tear down historic things and build new. I love the things you talk about. ❤

The amount of effort you put into making this is truly impressive and the results were equally interesting. I live in Leeds and love that a lot of the old architecture has been preserved but an awful lot was lost in the 1960's. Bradford is even worse, I grew up there and last time I had to go to the city centre I got lost, because it has been rebuilt and could be literally anywhere in the world. A lot of towns look the same these days. Same style, same buildings, same shops. It's depressing.
