Excerpts from the text “The Song of Enlightenment” (Cheng-dao ke), by Yongjia Xuanjue.
Yongjia Xuanjue (665 - 713) was a renowned Chinese Buddhist master of the Chan tradition during the Tang Dynasty.
From a young age, Xuanjue dedicated himself to the study of Buddhist teachings, especially Mahayana scriptures and meditation. After deepening his spiritual understanding, he traveled to meet the sixth Chan patriarch, Huineng, from whom he received recognition of his realization. Although he remained only a short time with his master, he became one of the most respected figures in the Chan tradition, known as the Master of Great Understanding of Yongjia.
His teachings emphasize the direct recognition of Buddha-nature, the transcendence of concepts, and liberation from the illusions of the mind. In his best-known work, “The Song of Enlightenment” (Zhengdao Ge), he teaches that true realization does not depend on rituals or intellectual knowledge, but on awakening to the original nature of consciousness. His verses highlight the unity between practice and realization, freedom from opposites, and the importance of recognizing truth in the present moment.
Yongjia Xuanjue is considered one of the great poets and masters of Chan Buddhism. His Song of Enlightenment has become a classic of Chinese spiritual literature, influencing generations of practitioners and preserving a profound and direct expression of the experience of awakening.

“Knowing the vision of wisdom without fully understanding it is like finding delicious food when you are hungry but not being able to eat it. Or like finding a good doctor when you are sick, but still not being able to be cured.”
Yongjia Xuanjue.
“The lion’s roar is a fearless speech. It is deeply regrettable to see those who, through ignorance, do not understand and remain hardened. For the practitioner of superior ability, a single understanding resolves everything. Practitioners of intermediate or inferior ability may hear many things, but still, they cannot believe. They only know that committing grave transgressions creates obstacles to enlightenment, but they do not see the secret teaching revealed by the Tathāgata.”
Yongjia Xuanjue.
“The great man holds the sword of wisdom. The blade is Prajñā (wisdom that sees reality directly) and its flame is like the fire of Vajra (indestructible wisdom). It not only destroys the mistaken views of others; it has long since made even the celestial demons lose their courage. It makes the thunder of Dharma resound and the drum of Dharma beat. It scatters the clouds of compassion and pours forth the nectar of teaching. Great beings, like dragons and elephants, walk upon this terrain and make it fertile everywhere. The three vehicles and the five natures awaken to the truth. On the snowy mountain, the purest milk is not mixed with other substances. Only the most precious nectar is extracted from it, and I receive it continuously.”
Yongjia Xuanjue.

“Quem poderia imaginar que a Essência da Mente é intrinsecamente pura!
Quem poderia imaginar que a Essência da Mente é intrinsecamente livre de surgimento ou aniquilação!
Quem poderia imaginar que a Essência da Mente é intrinsecamente autossuficiente!
Quem poderia imaginar que a Essência da Mente é intrinsecamente livre de mudanças!
Quem poderia imaginar que todas as coisas são a manifestação da Essência da Mente!”
