We jump started it, cleaned it, drove it — and then something went wrong!

It would be a real shame to scrap it. Especially as it’s not even got to 100k yet.

I think it would make a good series repairing it.

my 3ltr V6 cost£2k, 30,000 miles undriven for 2 years. New tyres belts plugs fluids discs pads calipers battery.... another £2k. No rust. it's been good as gold, 2 years, 15,000 smile on your face miles. For the price of a year's payments on a PCP.

I bought my 2.2 9 years ago as an in between car, it had done 77k then. Amazingly I still have it and now and is has 190k on the clock. No major problems in that time, just consumables. 1 clutch and flywheel, 1 wheel bearing, belt and tensioner. Best car I have ever owned. I’m frightened to buy a modern car that I can’t service and repair.

I’ll never forget this car! During some really difficult times, it literally saved me. The car kept running for 3–4 months with a failing turbo honestly, in all my years, I’ve never seen anything like it.

Of course, everything’s good now, and it was a long time ago, but in a way I’m genuinely grateful to that car. If it hadn’t been there for me back then, I honestly don’t know how my future would’ve turned out.

Such an underrated car. A real baby JAG 🐆🐆🐆

P.S. Of course, I eventually fixed it properly and sold it, and the new owners were really happy with it!

I have a X-Type 2.2 diesel 2007 had it 2 years paid 800 for it its on a 175k its not let me down it needs some patches for next mot im going to do it and keep the old girl going

They're a great car, and they really shift for a diesel, save it ! I've had the exact same issue with going into limp mode on my 2006 2.0D estate. There were hidden splits in the straight boost hose below the EGR valve and the elbow to the intercooler. Couldn’t see the splits until removed, got to drop the under bumper cover to do them. Fit new hose clips. £40 for both in silicone, fit and forget. Clean out the EGR valve too, they get clogged with thick carbon and stick, causing uneven boost and odd codes. Do all that and it will cure the random popping and limp mode. You'll get 50-60 mpg with ease and still have performance. Don't mix up the injectors, they coded to ECU and might need a recode if swapped. One other thing they're known for is the alluminium sandwich oil cooler down the front. They eventually perforated between the layers around the spot welds. It allows water and oil to mix under pressure as it heats and cools, mine went at about 10 years old. Gives a good impression of a blown head gasket, but the engine still runs perfect until temperature gets high, keep an eye out for oil in header tank. Easy job to swap, but it needs a good detergent flush to get oil out of the cooling system. Liquid laundrry detergent in plain water does a great job for a fraction of the price.

My S Type cost me £300. That was five years ago because the ABS light was on. New shafts to rear £350 including labour. Since then its needed 2 tyres oil changes and 2 light bulbs. Its been south coast to Scotland and back several times, on the continent twice and is driven pretty much daily. Never once let us down.
I know its a different car to your X-Type but given that they are becoming rarer, there probably isn't another that hasn't been welded, and even poorish ones are well over a grand now, i say save it.

Fix it! I have 4 at the moment, they are lovely cars. As soon as you had the coil light I thought fuel filter, cheap fix too. Patch them sills, sort the injector, fresh oil and good to go. There are so many cheap spares for these cars now. I've pumped a lot of time money and effort in to my 2005 3.0 V6 manual project car. Cars like this need to live - especially with so many modern bland ugly bloated things on the roads.

These are classic cars and well worth saving, it's not a Mondeo in a dress it's based on the Mondeo approximately 30% redesigned by jaguar.

Your cutting out problem is more likely the cam sensor, they don't show up on diagnostics, coil light flashes and you get intermittent starting and cutting out.

I had the 2.5 v6 with the 4 wheel drive. Loved the car, it randomly went into limp mode. Sills where rusty and air con didn't work or central locking 😅 had it for a year until I tried to get new tyres and was told that the ramp would snap it in half due to rust 😅. Traded it in but still miss that car.
