You know I can’t make it on my own
The paparazzi serve as a powerful symbol of that relentless surveillance. They represent a life where privacy is always under threat and every simple moment becomes available to the public.
“High by the Beach” isn’t just about getting high. It represents Lana’s longing for simplicity and escape. Lana imagines something as ordinary as sitting by the beach, getting high, and existing in peace, yet even that feels unattainable because of the constant intrusion surrounding her.
The beach, a place usually associated with freedom, becomes another space where she can’t even truly be alone and in her peace.
The song ultimately captures the tension between craving an ordinary and mundane life and being trapped in the image of being a celebrity while constantly being perceived and observed.
My hot take in that video is that Lana pulling the gun out of a guitar case has to be symbolic. Like she’s literally fighting back with her art/music. And the helicopter always felt like the media to me , constantly hovering over her, invading her space, trying to tear her down , while she just keeps making art. So her shooting it down feels like her shutting out all the noise and beating it through her music instead of feeding into the chaos.
