He says he was looking out for his nephews...not wanting them to walk behind her coffin...but then mentions her eating disorder in his eulogy while his 13 and 15 year old nephews are sitting there. Wow...the mind boggles.
He is so in love with his eulogy, he still can’t shut up about it 30 years later. He peaked that day. “On her behalf?” I don’t think so dude. She wasn’t even speaking to you.
For a man who has been through 4 wives with domestic violence & a man that refused Diana a home at Althorpe & a man not talking to his sister at the time of her death & a man who never put a penny towards Diana's funeral & a man whos children wont talk to him. Has no right to say anything
Charles Spencer became an NBC commentator from 1986 to 1995. Does he really think a 22 year old would have gotten a position with the leading US network if he hadn't been the brother of Princess Diana?PLEASE!!!
My hot take is that I never thought Earl Spencer's eulogy was brilliant or even very flattering to Diana. I always felt it was a backhanded way to call her unintelligent and a bit crazy. He also made this bold statement that he and the other Spencers would be a presence in William and Harry's life to make sure that Diana's vision for their upbringing was carried out. He then proceeded to have nothing to do with his nephews.
I’m 55 years old and I can honestly say that my brother who is older knows absolutely nothing about me, my life, and experiences.. not a clue! There is a very big difference between being 16 and 22. People change and grow. I don’t believe Charles Spenser knew his adult sister at all!
Can remember his eulogy and feeling how inappropriate it was for him to deliver it on that day. It has always left me with a poor opinion of him - looks like I got it in one.
He started this crap 30 years ago at her funeral when he said "William and Harry needed protection from the royals"...in a round about way. At the time I didn't see it for what it was, now I realize he was being completely disrespectful to her memory and her sons. Diana and Charles were moving on with their lives and deciding to parent their sons in a responsible way instead holding grudges at the time of her death.
I have felt for a long time that Diana's family got away with very little criticism for the way Diana's life turned out. Her grandmother was a confident of Queen Elizabeth and encouraged an 18 year old Diana to marry Charles a much older man. They would also have known about his relationship with Camilla because of their connections. That was a lot for a young fairly sheltered 18 year old to take on.
I had insomnia the night of the accident and was listening to BBC radio when it was first announced in the very early hours. I listened through the night until it was confirmed in the morning that she had died. I can confirm AS A FACT that the tone of the presenters was solemn and respectful throughout the broadcast and that there was no condescension or criticism at all. There was a sense from the beginning that this was serious.
I would hate it if any of my siblings wrote a book about me when I die. They presume they know me because of those short years we shared growing up. When they really don't know me at all, then and now.
