Friends, I was honored to present the 2020 Peter Richard Kenrick Lecture at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, delivering an academic paper entitled “Knocking Holes in the Buffered Self: Approaches to the Question of God.”
Many—especially the young—in today’s time have absented themselves from the practice of faith. Our culture and time is anomalous in the extreme, in that it’s the first ever to widely entertain God’s nonexistence. Christians, at least in the West, are facing a practically unprecedented crisis of disaffiliation. But there are paths out of the cave: the way of intelligibility, the way of contingency, and the way of the mystical.

I grew up a very sincere and excited evangelical. I lost my faith for about 5 years in my 20s for intellectual reasons that you address here. You were actually one of the instruments God used to bring me back to faith. And you're right. One of the biggest points of clarification for me was what is meant by God, not the greatest being among many but BEING as such, the ground of all being. Before accepting this idea, I became convinced of the transcendence of the human spirit by my own experience with meditation (as a non-believer). My experiences in meditation convinced me that there is something fundamental to human existence. From there, it wasn't hard to accept that God is that foundation. On a fundamental level, we (our core selves) are God in essence, or rather manifestations of God. Though that may sound heretical, I think that was the state of affairs before the fall. The fall happened when human kind, as manifestations of being, assumed the role of Being itself by presuming to be proper judges of what is good and evil. We confused our "godness" with God as such and assumed a role that only God as God can fulfill. Our natures were then corrupted, unable to be and do what we were made to be and do. Enter Jesus, God in the flesh, who came to infuse us with the grace we needed to die to sin and be made alive unto God once again.
Anyway, enough musing. Thank you for all your work! You have helped to save my soul.
