Why Eva Braun Is the Opposite of Every Other Nazi Wife

Why was the most famous woman in Nazi Germany also the most invisible? For twelve years, Adolf Hitler ruled the Third Reich in front of cameras, microphones, and roaring crowds, yet the woman who shared his bed, his table, and ultimately his death was kept almost entirely out of public view. While Emmy Göring swept through Berlin in furs and jewels, while Magda Goebbels gave radio interviews about German motherhood, while Lina Heydrich hosted dinner parties for the architects of genocide, Eva Braun existed as little more than a rumor. Most ordinary Germans had no idea she existed at all. She appeared in no official photographs released to the press, was introduced at no state functions, and was absent from every newsreel that chronicled the Führer's daily life. And yet, in the final hours of the regime, when the bombs were falling on Berlin and the Red Army was tightening its grip on the city, it was Eva Braun, not any of the other wives of Hitler's inner circle, who chose to stay by his side until the very end, marrying him less than forty hours before they died together in a concrete bunker beneath the Reich Chancellery.
