03:34 David Gilmour – Pulse Big Muff Lead Tone
06:16 Dan Auerbach – Black Keys Big Muff Sound

The Big Muff is one of the most iconic fuzz pedals ever made, but there’s a lot more to it than just cranking the sustain. In this video, I break down how pros like Billy Corgan, David Gilmour, and Dan Auerbach use the Big Muff to get massive rhythm, lead, and fuzz tones. I’ll show you the Big Muff settings, amp setups, and pedal tricks you can use to get more from your own pedal without buying new gear.

Don't forget, the Big Muff Corgan used was a late 70's op-amp version, which is a different circuit than a regular Big Muff, a more aggressive midrange, and less scooped. Hence why that op-amp was reissued as the "orange' Big Muff Pi Op-Amp to get that Siamese Dream sound. I own it and it's a killer Muff!

I run an epoch bias into the front of it with the boost cranked and the gain about 2 oclock, sounds so much fatter!

Without watching yet all I can say is crank the gain and come to taste. Eq as well, but the gain MUST BE MAXED.

Corgan boosted his Muff for Siamese Dream, he never ran it alone. He used an MXR distortion 2.

0:58 also, billie is using an op amp big muff. obv these are bloody expensive, but you can buy the reissue version, which does sound a lot more like the siamese dream sound

There is actually a new Dan Auerbach video where he talks only about his fuzzes that came out in the past week I think. It wasn't on Premier guitar but I'm sure can be found easily enough.

Fun video. 👍😎

Great video. Love layering fuzzes, we use the op amp and the russian muffs loads often with EQD Hoof Reaper and Data Corrupter.

I run an SD1 in front of my Big Muff. I'm gonna put my compressor in front of them now and start playing. Lol Thanks.

Another note Billy’s JCM 800 didn’t have the typical JCM 800 tubes it was modded with KT88 tubes.

Principles and concepts! Excellent presentation! YouTube "tonechasers" aggravate the hell out of me. There are good ones that treat the chase like a historical investigation like Aaron Rash and Eddie Clark. Most of them are full of shit. I appreciate that you go the opposite direction and say "this is not how they got the sound, but use these concepts and you might get close or find something new". Great video.

Great video! Must try the EQ before Muff approach... 👍

Cool channel. Do you do all the recording that you do on your own? What I mean is do you record all the instruments? Like for that little cherub rock sample?

I had a Big Muff in 1972. I bought it for $15. I sold it 3 years ago for $600. I've got a tube screamer, dark matter, super badges and the digital big muff which doesn't compare to the original. Of course I don't have all of those pedals in my chain at once
