I felt empathy for Joe when, for example, he spoke about his response to not having stood his ground, despite his military training, which I imagine demanded a great deal of courage from him.

If one imagined being confronted for the first time with an unknown giant humanoid and observing that humanoid charging towards one at an incredible speed whilst swinging its arms violently, its capabilities and intentions being completely unknown to one, one may wonder whether any amount of military training could incline the average human being to stand his or her ground in such a situation, especially if he or she were under the influence of infrasound and especially where one or more of his or her companions had begun to run (if I'm not mistaken, if a member of a group began running in the face of danger, especially in a highly unusual situation, his or her running may serve as an unconditioned stimulus that would elicit from most or all other members of the relevant group the unconditioned or involuntary response of running also).

That description of where the water meets the rock of the railroad tracks took me back to an area I used to go to in middle school I know exactly what that looks like. I used to think what is it like to be stuck between that area the water and The Rock and the railway train coming through. That really brings a vivid memory back for me.
