AVAA! i think what’s so genius about the song music is that it’s not just about the narrator’s love for music as well as their attraction to the subject, it’s about their attraction being completely overshadowed by an obsession with music. that obsession both starts the song (“last night i had a wet dream about the perfect song”) and ends it (“it’s everything to me”). even the attraction is framed in terms of music (“i opened my eyes and forgot all of the notes, by any chance do you know how it goes?”) and by the end of the song the subject seems like a side piece to the very act of creation. it’s like a misdirection game where the listener expects the love for music and the love for the subject to be analogous, but really they’re totally lopsided. there’s a melancholy underneath the excitement of the track, as contagious and as convincing as it is.
I think it's wrong to call this album a "Collection of Songs", turning away from the idea of a concept album because I feel like there is a coherent narrative here with this love story, which aside from that could represent things like her experience with fame for instance, while her love life itself is of course influenced by fame. However I can definitely agree with the idea that "just being" feels like resisting all the opression that is present nowadays. You're very right with that, it's a motivation for a lot of people I know right now.
Also I thought the "Little Zurich" remark about Boston was pretty funny, because Zurich is actually a really small city. There's a lot of kind people and nice places there but I imagine moving there would be a nightmare.
AVAA. She actually said something similar about San Francisco to what you mentioned about Boston. She said on an interview that going back to SF makes her feel a little sad, and that it feels like a ghost town because of things like Waymo and tech people renting places without actually living there.
Finally! I knew this would probably be my album of the year as soon as the single Music came out. It’s such a beautiful ode to the catharsis of falling in/out of love with anyone/thing and the strange anxiety around creation/creativity. Perfect album Absolutely insane production and aesthetic. AVAA!
listened to this album so much in the past couple days because I was traveling to atlanta, and I ended up getting stuck in the atlanta airport for pretty much an entire day and I kept walking around the airport aimlessly and riding the airport train all while listening to this and just observing people as I went. I know she mentioned writing this album in malls and airports and similar environments and also specifically to be listened to on headphones, like the most interesting thing is how much it feels like such a personal and individual thing to experience while being of a genre that is around dance and big shows and stuff. like I love the contrast there of the isolation and the acceptance and the emotion that layered under each track lyrically and sonically being expressed. There is so much here under the surface but it also just slaps on the surface and you can listen to it in any context which feels so right. I love underscores so much and the more time I've spent with this album the more layers and emotional subtlety she has packed into this album, one thing I love about this genre is repeated production and songwriting elements that hit you differently at different times and places I think this album will age extremely well the more we hear the songs on it. avaa <3
Hey Skye! If you're intrigued by the production on The Peace, I'd recommend 2005's Speak For Yourself by Imogen Heap. It's an incredibly influenctial album in general, not just pop - AVAA.
7:50 it really is the amalgamation of her talent. the performer and the producer, its so insane to have outstanding talent in almost every facet of the industry. all of my favorite artists recently are self written and self produced, and that adds so much to the project for me. so much respect for her - AVAA
AVAA great video as always professor Skye! Tell me (you want it) is such an amazing opening track, one of my favourites! I kind of think that it’s also not strictly relating to a romantic partner but her relationship with growing fame, being a music artist and interacting with fans. The “It” can be a musical career, where sometimes the artist changes and abandons themselves to appease the general public (the fans in some cases). I might be wrong, but that’s how I understood the song 😅 thank you again for the video! english is not my first language, sorry if some things were not relayed in the best way 😅 have a great day!
avaa <3 you should also check out Vylet Pony some time, has the exact same wow factor of "no way one person is doing all this", try the song "the wallflower equation"
