On September 19, 1940, a biplane came down at dusk in the desert south of Mersa Matruh. The pilot had been told his squadron was 30 miles south of the coast. It was 50. He hit a boulder at 75 miles an hour, cracked his skull on the gunsight, and crawled out of the fire blind. His name was Roald Dahl, and that crash should have ended his war. Instead it put him on a road that ran through the last air battle over Athens and into the White House, as an agent for British intelligence. This is the full story of how a fighter pilot of No. 80 Squadron became a spy.
