On December 14, 1994 an intermodal train operated by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroad lost control navigating the dangerous downhill grade of the El Cajon Pass in the Mojave Desert in California. With all efforts proving to be useless in the event the train had nowhere to go than to strike a parked Union Pacific coal train in the early morning. This animation closely follows the events that unfolded during the events leading up to and including the collision event.
