This 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics from Orchid Technologies appeared just recently on my channel. It had a very bright picture which is caused by a degraded RAMDAC. My previous resistor fix wasn't received too well because it could continue to drift if the voltage on the RAMDAC changes in the future. Today, I attempt to fix this. #sponsored

Every time i watch one of these 3dfx videos I remember that I have 2 diamond voodoo 2's laying around that I need to check if they have the resistor failure.

That LLM is overly confident of it being silicon degradation. The fix will sort of work, but I suspect there might be another external cause dumping something on the Vref pin. It's internally connected to the DAC output. Who knows what's in the path which messes with it and considering it's RF magic ... who knows. edit: you might be looking at another part which will fail in the future.

Thank you for another nice video and repair :) 1 suggestion: solder mask is not meant to be electrical isolation. It is good practice to use capton tape among solder mask covered traces and component pins.(regulator pin 1, possibly heatsink too). BTW the rework turned out pretty nicely.

Your videos have inspried me to do more with my 2 Creative 3d Blaster - 3dFX VooDoo 2 cards including updating the one at 8mb to 12. I’ve sourced the chips but want to practice soldering before I attempt the update. Keep up the amazing Videos! Cheers

This is a great solution in general, but In this particular case, I would've considered the first solution to be good enough. If there were more drift, it's not like it would go unnoticed and one could repeat the process at some point in the future. If the card is to be passed on to somebody who isn't comfortable calculating the right resistor value and with soldering, this is of course a much better solution. It's also much better for issues that are not obvious. A good new (to me) option to have at one's disposal for sure. Thanks Alex!

4:45 Ive been in electronics for 15 years and I only recently looked into shunt resistors, and I still dont understand how they work or what it means, but I have an idea of what they can be used for and how to attach one. Glad Im not not the only one who cant explain it.
