In this installment of the "Postwar" series, I return to the topic of the war in Afghanistan. This time, however, I'm discussing American support for the Afghans in their fight against the Soviets. Without the White House's assistance, the Soviet Union might have emerged victorious. For the first years of the conflict, Washington did this secretly. It tried to ensure that Soviet-licensed weapons reached Asia. Therefore, contacts with Israel and Egypt proved crucial in this matter. Until the mid-1980s, the Americans delayed providing the Mujahideen with state-of-the-art Stinger missiles and launchers. Ultimately, these proved crucial in defeating the USSR. How did this happen? You'll learn more in the latest installment of the "Postwar" series.
In my opinion, this is an extremely interesting thread in postwar history, especially in the context of current events in Ukraine.
