محافظة ظفار هي واحدة من المحافظات الإحدى عشر المكونة لسلطنة عمان. تقع في أقصى جنوب سلطنة عمان وتبعد مدينة صلالة عاصمة المحافظة عن عاصمة السلطنة مسقط بنحو 1000 كيلومتر، يحدها من الشمال الشرقي محافظة الوسطى، وتتصل من الجنوب الشرقي والجنوب ببحر العرب، ومن الغرب والجنوب الغربي بالحدود مع الجمهورية اليمنية ومن الشمال والشمال الغربي بصحراء الربع الخالي، تبلغ مساحتها حوالي 99,300 كيلومتر مربع أو ما يعادل ثلث مساحة سلطنة عمان، ويبلغ عدد سكان محافظة ظفار بنسبة 12% من إجمالي عدد سكان السلطنة ، حيث يقدر عدد سكانها 590,000 في يوليو 2024.
تكتسب محافظة ظفار أهمية تاريخية ومكانة خاصة في التاريخ العماني الحديث والقديم على السواء، كانت أرض اللبان والبخور في الجزيرة العربية وبوابة عمان على المحيط الهندي ومعبر القوافل في جنوب شبه الجزيرة العربية، وانطلاقة عمان إلى التقدم والتطور والازدهار في ظل النهضة العمانية الحديثة.
Dhofar Governorate is one of the eleven governorates that make up the Sultanate of Oman. Located in the far south of the country, its capital, Salalah, lies approximately 1,000 kilometers from the national capital, Muscat. It is bordered to the northeast by Al Wusta Governorate; to the southeast and south by the Arabian Sea; to the west and southwest by the border with the Republic of Yemen; and to the north and northwest by the Rub' al Khali (Empty Quarter) desert. Covering an area of approximately 99,300 square kilometers—equivalent to one-third of the Sultanate's total land area—Dhofar accounts for 12% of the country's total population, with an estimated 590,000 inhabitants as of July 2024.Dhofar Governorate holds historical significance and a special place in both ancient and modern Omani history; it was the land of frankincense and incense in the Arabian Peninsula, Oman’s gateway to the Indian Ocean, a crossroads for caravans in the southern Arabian Peninsula, and the starting point for Oman’s journey toward progress, development, and prosperity under the modern Omani Renaissance.
