Homer's Odyssey is one of the most important texts in world culture. It is the story of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, who after the Trojan War attempts to return home to his wife Penelope and son Telemachus, but his journey stretches on for ten years.

Today, I invite you to explore Odysseus's full journey from Troy to Ithaca and answer questions that will help us see this story from a different perspective: Who is Odysseus and why did Homer choose him? Was Homer a real person? Where might Ithaca have been? Who were the Lotus Eaters, the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Laestrygonians, Circe, the Sirens, Scylla, and Charybdis? What connections could these myths have to real geography, seafaring, and the fears of the ancient Greeks?

Myths, real-life prototypes, an ancient map of the Mediterranean, the hero's journey, the return home, revenge on Penelope's suitors, and a strange ancient sequel – "Telegony."
