I went to Malacca, Malaysia, a city that was under Portuguese rule for over 130 years and became one of the most important points of Portuguese presence in Southeast Asia. More than 500 years after the arrival of the Portuguese, I went in search of what still remains of this presence in Malacca and, above all, of the people who continue to carry part of this history. I spoke with local residents to understand what it's like to live in a place where Portuguese influence is still present in the culture, traditions, food, names, and even in a language that has survived for centuries. Throughout this trip, I met the Kristang community, descendants of the Portuguese who remained in Malacca after the city's conquest in 1511. I spoke with locals about their families, their identity, the Portuguese words they still use, and how a language and culture managed to survive so far from Portugal for over 500 years. What remains of Portugal in Malacca? How have these people maintained this connection with our country for so many centuries? And after 500 years, can we still recognize Portugal in this part of the world?
