Antonio de la Cruz, political analyst and president of Inter American Trends, spoke with the program "La Tarde" on NTN24 about the international implications of the return of democratic leader María Corina Machado to Venezuela.
"María will return not when it is just, which is what is appropriate, which is what we are demanding, but when it is useful, useful to those who hold the key (the Trump Administration)," De la Cruz stated, referring to the midterm elections to be held in the United States next month.
The analyst identified four "clocks" operating simultaneously in this situation: Washington's, which "buys time with each negotiation"; former President Trump's, which "manages gestures without a timeline"; the U.S. Congress's, "which speaks now because the election is in November"; and the Venezuelan people's, "who only ask when."
"Washington understood that excluding María Corina from the transition comes at a high price," De la Cruz stated, highlighting the contradiction that "the leader with the greatest popular support cannot set foot on her homeland, unlike other leaders who have returned to the country."
