Giuseppina is a woman who grew up in the mountains, totally disconnected from the outside world.
We're in Val Seriana, there's no road leading straight to her old stone house, and she has no phone, radio, or TV. We got in touch with her thanks to some locals.
"How come you came from so far away?" she asks us, blown away by the distance we traveled to meet her.
Right off the bat, we step into a world that's alien to the modern one—a simple, real, and tough world. Inside the house, there's no kitchen or stove, just a fireplace that heats up the room where she eats. The bedroom, like the rest of the house, isn't heated. On cold winter nights, she tells us she just throws on more blankets to stay warm—she even got up to sixteen of them.
She spends the whole day outside, always working, from morning to night, ever since she was a little girl. In fact, she's never done anything else her whole life. Watching her chop wood, fetch logs from the forest, take care of the cows, and gather dry leaves with an old basket—these are everyday moments that really leave a mark on us. We're deeply struck by the willpower and independence of a woman living in another era, who feels lost when she looks at the city down in the valley, and finds herself in the bare essentials of an old, hard, and genuine life.
