The TRUTH about silicones: a trichologist explains

Silicone free has become the default advice in haircare, and almost nobody explains what silicones would actually have to be doing to your hair for that advice to make sense. In this video I go through the three things people are afraid of, what the EU restrictions on D4, D5 and D6 are actually about, and why amodimethicone is the silicone I keep coming back to.

I also cover the one real limitation, which is that it does not rinse out with water, and what that means if you have textured hair.

I have found no peer reviewed study linking topical silicones to hair loss of any kind. If you feel silicones caused you to lose hair, what most likely happened is product build-up and breakage. Build-up makes hair heavy and it snaps mid-shaft. Hair loss happens at the root, below the skin, and nothing sitting on the outside of a strand reaches that. They look the same in the mirror. They are not the same problem, and the fix is different.

I love silicones. They help with detangling and that means less breakage so I retain more length. I have noticed many people that use products heavy in oil or silcones don't regularly clarify their hair ( every 4-6 weeks) or wash it, then try to blame the silicones for breakage and dryness. People also do this nonsense with products containing sulfates and things like petroleum and mineral oil. They have no understanding of cosmetic chemistry and that even water is a chemical.

I literally don’t understand the worry about silicone films when those same people are using products with shea butter, coconut oil, mango butter, etc. Silicones can actually facilitate even water dispersion across the hair in a way these other ingredients can’t and are typically less occlusive. Just don’t get the silicone phobia.

Great video, I plan to incorporate Moroccan oil argan oil which is a silicone based hair serum whenever I undo my twist out and fluff out my hair. Since I primarily wear my hair loose, I think it’ll keep my hair strands from becoming as dry and weathered while reducing friction, especially around my ends.
