Every one of the 10,000+ riders I've coached has told me they want to corner safer, faster, or both. No two corners are the same, which adds to the challenge. Yet most corners offer common clues to help you unlock the secrets of success. Here's how to demystify your corner conundrums on your next ride:
1. STOP at the entrance to the corner.
2. LOOK at the trail surface. Note that the bottom/inside of the corner is usually loose and rutted. This is the early apex line, A.K.A where the sheep ride. You'll see this even more on corners with consequences to the outside, such as cliffs, cacti and trees. This is the BAH-BAH bad line.
3. MOVE your gaze to the outside of the corner. This is the late apex line, where the wolves ride.
4. TURN your head sideways and see the corner for what it is: a trough turned on its side.
5. RIDE the corner like the wolf you are, rowing into the corner and anti-rowing out as you carve the late apex line.
6. HOWL butt down the trail with newfound confidence and joy!
