Millions of years ago, the Mediterranean Sea experienced one of the most extraordinary events in Earth's history: it almost completely disappeared.
In place of the vast expanse of water we know today, there was an unrecognizable landscape, marked by immense dried-up basins, gigantic salt deposits, and extreme conditions. This spectacular event is known as the Messinian Salinity Crisis.
But how could an entire sea disappear?
And, more importantly, how did it return?
In this video, discover how the gradual closure of the Strait of Gibraltar isolated the Mediterranean from the Atlantic Ocean, causing massive evaporation and a radical transformation of the entire region. For hundreds of thousands of years, enormous quantities of salt accumulated at the bottom of the Mediterranean basin, leaving behind traces that are still visible today.
Then, around 5.33 million years ago, everything changed. The Atlantic Ocean is believed to have once again breached the barrier separating the two basins, triggering a massive flood known as the **Zanclean Flood**. In an extremely short time on a geological timescale, water is thought to have once again inundated a large part of the Mediterranean basin.
A natural disaster of unimaginable magnitude… that literally reshaped the geography of an entire region.
